Group title: Why I Love Aquaponics

I first became interested in Aquaponics after my wife gave me a magazine about living 'naturally'... for no other reason that it was the holiday season and I like reading!

Well... I read this story about being able to grow veggies AND eat fish from the same garden... Cool! ..

I did some research into Hydroponics (basically a closed loop water system into which you pour money!) and discovered that perhaps that was not the way I wanted to go...

Aquaponics (a similar system but one that uses FISH to provide the 'money' (fertiliser) for the plants..

Voila - Fish feeding plants feeding me!!

So - over Christmas last year I set-up a complete 'beginners' system - see some pix here! that has now produced some Silverbeet, Tomatoes (ok - tiny ones!) Chilli's, Basil, Strawberries and much more.

If you're a fan of Aquaponics, just want to find out more or you're an expert, let me know please!... There is also a GREAT website I joined called Aquaponics HQ

Check it out!

BTW - this photo is of Silverbeet - notice - 'no dirt'!... just scoria (stones) to hold it in place... the first photo (the category photo) just shows the end 'grow bed' with some Chokos... this feeds into the 150ltr fish tank where I have 6 Silver Perch. Their waste is pumped up to the top of three grow beds and is filtered via a gravity feed back into the fish tank! I only feed a small amount of food daily - NEVER clean the tank and all seems to be reasonably balanced...
